Find out where you stand

Add your gross self-employment and property income, before expenses and mortgage interest. For joint property, count only your share. That total, for the tax year shown, is your qualifying income.

Nothing you type here is stored or sent anywhere. It stays in your browser.

Four updates and a final declaration

You keep digital records in compatible software, send HMRC quarterly updates and file a final declaration after the year ends. If the bookkeeping is current, each update is quick.

Q1April to JulyA summary of income and expenses, sent from the software.
Q2July to OctoberSame again. No tax is calculated, nothing is paid.
Q3October to JanuarySame again.
Q4January to AprilThe fourth summary closes the year.
FinalFinal declarationReplaces the annual return. Reliefs, adjustments and the tax figure, confirmed once.
You are not paying tax four times a year. The quarterly updates are summaries, not tax calculations. Your payment dates have not moved.
The annual return has not disappeared. It has changed shape. The final declaration does the job it used to do.

Questions we get asked about MTD

Calm, factual answers. The facts are urgent enough without help.

Am I actually in scope?

If your gross income from self-employment and property combined was over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year, you were mandated from 6 April 2026. Over £30,000, April 2027. Over £20,000, April 2028. Gross, not profit.

Does MTD apply to my limited company?

No. MTD for Income Tax applies to unincorporated sole traders and landlords. Limited companies continue under corporation tax. Property held through a company sits outside these thresholds.

Do I have to pay tax four times a year now?

No. The quarterly updates are summaries of income and expenses, not tax calculations. Payment dates are unchanged.

Can I still use a spreadsheet?

Only if it is linked to HMRC-compatible software that makes the digital submission. A standalone spreadsheet is no longer sufficient on its own. We set you up on Xero.

I am mandated and I have not done anything. How much trouble am I in?

Usually less than you fear, if you move now. HMRC confirmed no penalty points for late quarterly updates in 2026/27 for those mandated in April 2026. Penalties for late payment and a late final declaration still apply, and the full points regime starts in 2027/28. We can bring your records and submissions up to date.

What if I own property jointly?

Only your share of the gross rent counts. A £70,000 rental income split equally gives each owner £35,000, below the April 2026 threshold but above the April 2027 one.

What happens after I enquire?

Within one working day a named person gets back to you, by email or phone, whichever you gave us. If you asked for an instant estimate you already have the figure, and the call turns it into a proposal. Nothing is set up and nothing changes with your current accountant until you say yes. If it is urgent, ring 020 8087 3107.
